A Guide To Using Body Hair Removal Products
There is a huge choice of body hair removal products on the market. The good news is that most of them are effective and can be purchased at a relatively low cost.
The choice you will make is dependent on where on the body the hair must be removed from and what the color and thickness of the unwanted hair is.
All of the following body hair removal products work well, for both men and women, and you will be able to make your personal choice after reading the pros and cons outlined.
Electric shavers: There are an abundance of these on the market and they range in price from $20 to $200 depending on brand and quality. They are all effective at removing the hair above the skin but the downside is that hair can grow back thicker than it originally was. Cuts and nicks can also be a problem for people with very delicate skin but the modern shaver eliminates most of this issue.
Wax and Sugaring Gel: These two body hair removal products can be used at home or, more commonly, are used if you go to a spa or salon. If used incorrectly they can have side effects of skin burn and irritation so it is recommended that you use the services in a salon before trying this at home.
Epilators: This is a body hair removal system that pulls multiple hairs out from the root. They are electrically operated – battery, rechargeable or corded – and have a simple design. Because they pull the hair, they can cause pain, especially the first application. But it is an effective method and prices range from about $40 up to around $200 for a full kit.
Hair Growth Inhibiting Products: These are products (typically creams) that when applied, supposedly, stop hair from growing. There are multiple products on the marketplace and many of them have been shown to simply NOT work. There is one prescription cream called “Vaniqa” that has been shown to stop hair growth on some women’s faces and there are some oral medications that have been shown to slow the rate of hair growth. Herbal and non-prescription treatments are not recommended due to their cost and ineffectiveness.
Tweezers: These should be cleaned before each use to insure against infection and are, by a long way, the cheapest method of removing unwanted hair.
Depilatory Products: These products use chemicals to dissolve the hair on the surface of the skin. They come in the form of gel or mousse and some people with sensitive skin have complained about irritation and redness because of the chemicals used.
None of these body hair removal products are permanent and some may have unwanted side effects. And, as with any method, if you do this at home you must follow the instructions carefully.
